| Training and Discipline | |
Training and discipline are different even though in many cases they are one in the same. To train an animal your teaching it to do specific things, either by request or just learning what is permissible or not. Therefore there are more types of training than the detail given here. I suppose the most often referred to type of training would be obedience. There are numerous methods that are used in obedience training. Be selective and choose the type of training that fits you and your dogs needs best. It is important to begin training your dog while it is still very young. Dogs will continue some training from you until the age of 2 years, but don't make the mistake of waiting until its 6 months old. Although it's important to allow your puppy to act and play like one, beginning consistent disciplining with them will be to your advantage. When training your dog, keep in mind that punishment doesn't work. Unless you are able to punish your dog by catching them in the act every time, they won't understand why. Your pet when punished will associate your anger with whatever they were just doing. You'll see more success modifying your pets' behavior if you simply change the environment so that "bad" behavior isn't fun anymore. For instance, move the trash or put a lid on it so it's not so easy to get to. If you are troubled with things being chewed on, make more available chew toys to divert their attention elsewhere. Even though pets are not people, we do share a preference for pleasant things. Instead of stopping "bad" behaviors, start thinking about how to get them to do "good" behaviors so you can give them a reward. Housebreaking your new puppy is can take lots of patients and time for
owners. The best method is consistency. Knowing when you puppy needs to
relieve themselves is the key to house-training. If you establish a routine
and keep and eye on 'em, you'll know exactly when they need to go. It
is also helpful for your dog to establish one particular area as the toilet
spot. When dogs relieve themselves, they release scent chemicals that
are passed with the waste called pheromones. These chemicals trigger the
dog at a later time to want to eliminate again. The odor lets other dogs
know that this patch of ground is taken. Using the same area will assist
your dog in being housebroken. Bits of advice, if you're struggling with
your pet using the wrong spots in your house, try feeding your dog in
those locations. Dogs will not often soil where they eat. Feeding your
dog consistently at the same time of the day helps your dog know what
to expect. As it ages, containment will be easier, reducing outings to
about 4 a day. Keep in mind, accidents will occur and dogs should not
be punished for them. Stay positive and reward your dog with treats when
he succeeds. Positive reinforcements will always show you better results.
